A GREEN AND AUBERGINE ENAMELLED 'DRAGON AND CLOUD' CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
JIAQING UNDERGLAZE BLUE SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1796-1820)
The domed cover is enamelled with two animated aubergine and green three-clawed dragons trailing iron-red flames from their haunches circling a four-character iron-red Jiaqing seal mark within a gilt bordered rectangular cartouche, all reserved on a ground of pale underglaze blue clouds, the base similarly decorated, the interior and the base glazed turquoise.
8 7/8 in. (25.8 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A number of variations of this 'dragon and cloud' box and cover exist. These include a gilt and iron-red decorated blue and white circular box and cover sold at Christie's New York, 29 March 2006, lot 445.
