NEVAKHOVICH, Mikhail L'vovich (1817-1850). Eralash. Al'bom karrikatur. [The Jumble. An Album of Caricatures.] St. Petersburg: Paul Petit, and K. Krai, 1846-1849.

4 volumes, 2° (535-590 x 350-450mm). Lithographic titles and 84 plates by Paul Petit, Karl Krai and others. (Spotting, some plates browned, some plates on new stubs, last volume with dampstain in one corner, a few mostly marginal repairs, some borders just trimmed by the binder.) Contemporary boards (rebacked and recornered in modern calf preserving early spine labels, board edges rubbed, light wear). Provenance: Sebastopol Officers Library (bookplate, inventory note dated 1877); 'Printed in Soviet Union' (small import stamp) -- Paul M. Fekula.

FIRST EDITION. THE FEKULA COPY. A COMPLETE SET OF THE VERY RARE 'FIRST RUSSIAN COLLECTION OF CARICATURES' (Fekula), and 'STILL THE BEST OF ALL RUSSIAN PUBLICATIONS OF HUMOROUS CARICATURES' (Teviashov). Eralash touched on many aspects of St. Petersburg life, and no doubt attracted the attention of censors. Issued in four yearly fascicles, complete sets were hard to obtain from the outset; as early as 1910 Solov'ev called full sets 'a great rarity'. Burtsev 388; Fekula 7073 (this set; 'visually vertiginous satirical album'); Obol'ianinov 1706; Smirnov-Sokol'skii, Moia biblioteka 2016 (confirming that vol. 1 was issued in a smaller format); Solov'ev, Redkiia knigi. Katalog 105 140; Teviashov, Opisanie neskol'kikh graviur i litografii, pp.146-152. (4)
