Lot Essay

Ferdinand Erfmann was a member of the Populists, an artists' group in the 1930s wanting to create realist art for the people. The two cycling girls in the present lot are a good example of the simple, popular topics they used to achieve this. The healthy and voluptuous Dutch girls shown in 'Cycling girls' represent Erfmann's image of the ideal woman.
