Lot Essay
This clock relates closely to a circa 1770 design by Jean-Charles Delafosse (1734-1791) now at Waddesdon Manor (G. de Bellaigue, The James A. de Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor, Drawings for Architecture, Design and Ornament, vol. I, Aylesbury, 2006, p. 180, cat. 122). A clock of virtually identical design but lacking the swags under the dial and with variant ornament to the top is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de la Pendule Française, Paris, 1997, p. 191, fig. D.
The signature on the dial of this clock may refer to François-Mathieu Jouanin (1733-1800), maître in 1776 and recorded at Rue Jacob from 1778 to 1787 and Cour du Louvre in 1789 (Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français, Paris, p. 334).
