FIRST EDITION WITH TWO AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED BY GEORGE SAND tipped onto front endpapers of vol. I. In the first letter, dated 29 January 1859, addressed to a 'cher enfant', Sand requires a complete edition of the work of Angelo Beolco ('detto il Ruzzante'), composed of 'nine small volumes', all in dialect and unmodernized: 'si l'on trouvait une autre èdition plus ancienne ou plus moderne, n'importe, mais pas modernisée'; another letter, dated 8 April 1859, is a series of thanks for having received the volumes. Ruzzante is the subject of pp.77-118 in vol. II. (2)
