OFFICIAL BRITISH GOVERNMENT STATEMENT OF THE END OF THE BRITISH MANDATE IN PALESTINE paving the way for the creation of the modern independent state of Israel. With the failure of the British to bring about an independent state of Palestine with power-sharing agreements between Arab and Jew as proposed in the 1939 White Paper (see lot 273), together with the failure of British forces to contain the sectarian violence let alone the attacks upon themselves, and with a cost of over £100 million over 26 years to maintain British forces and government in the region, the British government realized that its position was untenable. The newly formed United Nations thought that a partition plan could be implemented (Resolution 181), but the plan had no Arab support, and as the UN were not prepared to commit any troops to the project, the British handed over control to local authorities and withdrew, the last troops leaving on 30th June 1948. This marked a crucial turning point both in the history of the Middle East and the British Empire.
