BRETON, André (1896-1966). Les Vases Communicants. Paris: Cahiers Libres, 1932. 8° (185 x 135mm). Printed press release laid-in. (Leaf 1.7 detached but present, margins browned.) Original illustrated wrappers printed in black and pink after Ernst (spine browned and possibly neatly repaired, some wear at the extremities); tan morocco case by Cambras, the upper side reproducing a design by Ernst, protected in a cloth-covered case. Provenance: André Breton (presentation inscription to:) -- Guillermo de Torre (author, 1900-1971; stamp and marginalia, probably in his hand).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY BRETON TO GUILLERMO DE TORRE, poet and prominent founding member of Spanish avant-garde movements, including Creacionismo and Ultraismo: 'A Guillermo de Torre, très amical hommage d'André Breton'. Les Vases Communicants is Breton's most intense work on dreams and Freudian interpretation. This copy a review copy, with the printed 'service de presse' [ie. 'S.P.'] mention on the rear cover, and in a fine case by Cambras which echoes the Ernst design on the covers.
