There are two known variants of the composition offered here, according to Michael Robinson's magisterial catalogue raisonné. The first version, identical in size, is in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Strasbourg. The second version, known as the Pratt version, slightly smaller in size, was engraved by P.C. Canot in 1773, and was sold in these rooms on 13th May 1848.

In this version, the flagship appears to be by the hand of Willem the Younger himself, but the fault in the perspective of the bow of the rowing boat in the foreground, which appears to be too high above the surface of the water and the size of the man by the stern of the kaag, must be attributed to his studio.
