A ROMAN MARBLE HEAD OF MERCURY
CIRCA 1ST CENTURY B.C.-1ST CENTURY A.D.
Based on a 5th century B.C. Greek prototype, the youthful god with his head turned and tilted slightly to his right, depicted with soft cheeks and a square dimpled chin, the fleshy undulating lips slightly parted, the broad forehead with a bulge over the softly-arching brows, the recessed eyes with thick upper lids, the hair a mass of short, upswept comma-shaped locks, with wings emerging at the crown of his head
