Lot Essay

Gilbert Jodrell was the second son of Paul Jodrell of Lincoln's Inn and his wife Judith, elder daughter of Gilbert Sheldon. The arms of Jodrell were originally granted to Paul Jodrell Esq., of Duffield, co. Derby, the Clerk to the Honourable House of Commons (College of Arms Ms: Grants 5/241). The arms of Vanderplank were granted to Samuel Vanderplank of Tokenhouse Yard in 1727 (College of Arms Ms: Grants 8/21). Gilbert and Anne Jodrell had three daughters, Ann, Hannah and Elizabeth. Only the eldest, Anne (b.1748) survived childhood. She married Christopher Clitherow of Bird Place, co. Hertford, in 1776.
