Lot Essay

The subject of this painting is a quote from Terence's comedy Eunuchius and can be translated as 'without wine and water, venus grows cold' (Act IV, line 5). The composition of this charming little slate relates closely to an etching by Jan Harmensz. Muller after the large painting of the subject by Spranger, formerly in the collection of Rudolf II (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum).
