Lot Essay

In the 1910s Brodsky painted a number of works depicting children playing in the park; his diploma piece A warm day is held in the collection of the Brodsky House Museum, St Petersburg, as are a number of other works on this theme including On the outskirts of Paris and Children in a meadow. Le jardin du Luxembourg is a characteristic example of a work from this period, painted in the artist's distinctive decorative style, exemplified by the twisted branches and his mosaic-like treatment of light.

We are grateful to Natalia Balakina, Director of the Brodsky Museum, St Petersburg, for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
