Salambo premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow on the 10th January 1910. The ballet was based on Flaubert's novel and focused on the tragic love story of the heroine whose name provides the title. Set in Carthage in 240 BC, the choreography for the ballet was developed by Aleksandr Gorsky, the score provided by Andrey Fedorovich Arends.
