The present work is one of only three known paintings of Southern subjects by David Johnson and was used as the basis for a reproductive engraving by Samuel V. Hunt. It relates to the larger oil painting of 1860, The Natural Bridge of Virginia, formerly in the collection of Jo Ann and Julian Ganz, Jr., Los Angeles, California.
