Lot Essay

Lan Ying is one of the most important painters of the late Ming period. Active in the Jiejiang Hangzhou area, he studied under the tutorage of Dong Qichang and consequently developed his own painting style. Known for his intense personality, Lan Ying liked to use bold lines. Since he had decided to be a professional painter at an early age, he was very particular about techniques and use of colours and hence, rather flamboyant in style. Lan Ying was regarded at the time as a painter of the Wulin School. He has been influential in Chinese art history, especially in bridging the artistic styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
