This painting represents Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Victoria, Princess Royal. In 1858 she married Prince Frederick William of Prussia, who ascended to the throne as Emperor Frederick III in 1888, but reigned for only 3 months before his death.
The present work is a copy after the full length portrait by Von Angeli belonging to the Hessische Hausstiftung at Schloss Friedrichshof and is four years later in date than the 1890 head and shoulders portrait illustrated O. Millar, The Victorian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, 1992, p. 16., fig 4. According to a label on the reverse, this painting hung in Queen Victoria's bedroom at Windsor Castle.
