In 1932 Hardy, wishing to indulge his passion for golf, decided to join Stan Laurel, on Laurel's summer vacation to visit his family in England. However, early on in the year it was leaked to the press that the duo would be visiting the U.K. and their plans for a peaceful holiday were soon overtaken. With their management keen to monopolise on the opportunity, the holiday was transformed into a publicity tour with MGM advertising the trip in the trade papers.
During the trip Laurel and Hardy visited several places in both England and Scotland and were stunned at the extreme levels of attention from fans, during their trip to Glasgow they were stormed by a 6,000 strong crowd, resulting in the hospitalisation of nine people. The pair also planned to tour France and Spain but when arriving in Paris the attention was just as relentless so they returned to England.
