20 parts in 19, 8o (224 x 145 mm). Engraved frontispiece, title and 38 plates after Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"], lacking the "Our Housekeeping" plate in part 15 but with a duplicate of "The River" plate from part 16 (some spotting and discoloration). Original printed blue-green pictorial wrappers (five volumes rebacked, parts 7 and 8 with repaired tears on front wrappers, part 9 with upper corner of rear wrapper renewed, some chips at edges); two red morocco pull-off cases.
FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS, with variant rear wrappers to parts 5, 6, 12 and 16, with the "Copperfield Advertiser" in each part and all ads listed by Hatton & Cleaver with the following exceptions: part two lacking ad at end; part 8 lacking the final leaf of the "Copperfield Advertiser" and lacking the rare ad for "Lett's Diaries"; part 9 lacking pp.5-12 of the "Copperfield Advertiser" and the "Now ready" ad; part 12 lacking the "Copperfield Advertiser"; part 14 lacking the "Household Words" slip at front; part 15 lacking the "Working Man's Friend" ad at back; part 16 lacking the "Copperfield Advertiser" and two slips at front. Hatton and Cleaver note that the number of advertisements is fewer in David Copperfield than in any of Dickens's other works issued in 19 parts.
David Copperfield was Dickens's eighth novel, written at the midpoint of Dickens's career and very much drawing on the author's own life. It is considered to be the novel that divides Dickens's early works from his later. The novel is scarce in parts. As Eckel notes, the printing was comparatively small, the parts were "much read and roughly handled," and "fine, clean and unrepaired copies" were "difficult to procure" even in 1932.
