4o (315 x 243 mm). Title printed in red and black, hand-colored frontispiece portrait of the author by Gordon Ross, numerous plates (some colored). Original full red morocco, gilt border of stylized hunting dogs, spine gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut (minor rubbing to corners); red quarter morocco folding box. Provenance: Duke of Gloucester (presentation inscription and bookplate; his sale Christie's London, 27 January 2006, lot 766, part lot).

FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 6 of 50 copies on Van Gelder paper, frontispiece portrait SIGNED BY THOMAS. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THOMAS on the front flyleaf: " In America, the first organized Hunt, founded on 29 October 1766 by twenty seven Gentlemen of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania was designated 'The Gloucester Foxhunting Club' and so with the greatest interest and respect this inscription is made for H.R.H. The Duke of Gloucester by Joseph B. Thomas, 15 February 1929." An important work and "the first of the big, beautiful Derrydale Deluxes. It was a model for many of the ones that followed" (Frazier).
