"THE RAREST OF DERRYDALES" (Siegel)
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 27 of 50 copies of this rare work. [Laid In:] LOWE. Autograph note signed, 11 March 1958: "History of Facts, by E.V.C. 50 sets of sheets were printed and 27 copies (only) were bound in full red levant leather, 25 copies were delivered to Mr. Woodward and 2 copies were given to Mr. E.V. Connett. Certain statements in the book relating to an individual horseman caused Mr. Woodward to send all the copies (with the exception of the 2 given Mr. Connett) to his bank vault, no copies were to be given away or disposed of while he was still alive. After his death, his son showed no interest in relation to those books and to the best of our knowledge no copies have ever been disposed of with the exception of the 2 owned by Mr. Connett, one of these #26 was given to Princeton University Library and the second copy # 27 was sold to Arthur Leidesdorf who later sold this copy at the Parke-Bernet Galleries to Frank J. Lowe who is the owner of the book at this time March 11, 1958 Signed - Frank J. Lowe." According to Frazier, a few additional copies have escaped the family since 1958 when Lowe composed this note. Bred and owned by William Woodward, Gallant Fox became only the second thoroughbred to win the Triple Crown in 1930. Gallant Fox later sired Omaha, another Woodward-owned and -bred Triple Crown winner in 1935. Gallant Fox and Omaha are the only father and son horses to win the Triple Crown. RARE: According to American Book Prices Current, this is the only copy of this work sold at auction in the last 30 years. Frazier W 12-a (this copy); Siegel 51.
