Bartolommeo Bottari, like Stefano Chiereghin, was born in Chioggia and after studying medicine at Padua returned to his home town where, like Chiereghin, he became part of the group of natural scientists who explored the marine biology of the Adriatic. He had a large personal collection of marine specimens and his gift to Jacob Künhans was Chiereghin's drawing of a newly-discovered species of Adriatic algae, which Bottari had named after Künhans.
