Lot Essay

Perhaps a preparatory drawing for the more highly-finished portrait study, executed on the same day, which is in the British Museum (inv. 1906,0419.80). The final portrait was reproduced in H.C. Marillier, Men and Women of the Century, London, 1896, p. 44.
