Lot Essay

Born in 1968, Indonesian artist Agapetoes Agus Kristiandana is known for his visually intriguing paintings and sculptures centered around the cow and the pig that comment on universal issues concerning the environment and humanity. In The Professional (Lot 548), Agapetoes fuses an image of a mother cow with the idiom of Mother Earth to comment upon mankind's relationship with earth and its biosphere as the giver and sustainer of life. Agapetoes' sculpted cow has two udders and an exaggerated mid-section, a reference to the notion that over-reliance and exploitative dependence on Mother Earth by mankind will have unimaginable consequences.
