Lot Essay

A design for a porphyry vase of this shape was included as no. 3 in the 1799 designs for vases executed by the Court ciseleur Ludvig Rung and also appears in two variants in the 1805 catalogue (ill. Porphyre La Pierre Royale, Paris, 1990). A closely related vase with eagle heads handles is illustrated ibid, Paris, 1990, no. 6.
