Lot Essay

Georges van den Bos was born in Ghent and studied at the school of art there, then in Brussels before completing his training in Paris. His paintings are included in several collections including the Museum of Ghent. His best known works are depictions of elegant ladies.
This large example is one of his better works, depicting a mother with her daughters. All are dressed in the finest fashions of the age. when one considers the elaborate and decorative nature of the frame, it must be suspected that it was commissioned for a grand setting by a very wealthy patron.
