The globular teapot with crabstock handle and spout, enameled with a portrait of Frederick of Prussia below the inscription 'FRE PRUFSIAE REX', the reverse inscribed 'SEMPER SUBLIMES' above a military trophy; the mask molded wall-pocket enameled with a similar portrait between the initials FP; the transparent green-glazed hot-milk jug and cover, enameled with a large cabbage rose and buds

Frederick the Great of Prussia, an ally with Britain during the Seven Years War (1756-1763), helped win critical military victories over the French and Austrians in 1757. This success endeared him to the patriotic British public. Staffordshire potters responded with saltglazed objects enameled with his portrait and wares inscribed 'Success to the King of Prussia'. The ermine ground is a heraldic inspired reference to royalty.
