Lot Essay

Sold by Ernst August, Prinz von Hannover Herzog zu Braunschweig und Lüneburg (who married Caroline Grimaldi, Princess of Monaco in 1999) at the large Sotheby's sale of Schloss Marienberg contents, this service was probably acquired by his ancestor, Ernst Augustus I of Hanover (1771-1851) a son of King George III of England. The death of Ernst Augustus I's brother, King William IV, and the accession of his niece Victoria to the British throne ended 123 years of union between the two royal houses.
