Inscribed A little learning is a dangerous thing. Drink deer or else not taste of the Pierian Spring: A shallow draught intoxicates the brain But drinking largely sobers us again. and inscribed Wrought by Jennet Avery E. Hampton Au. 20. 1821. aged .9 along the bottom border.

Jennet Avery, baptized in Easthampton, Massachusetts, 28 June 1812 worked this needlework sampler in 1821. The poem quoted in the samples comes from Alexander Pope (1688-1744) titled An Essay on Criticism written in 1709. She married Spencer Janes on 20 October 1831 (Additional information provided by Carol and Stephen Huber).
