Lot Essay

Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington began sculpting at the young age of 13 and continued until her death at age 97, specializing in animal and garden sculpture. She spent time observing animals at the Bronx Zoo, New York, which is reflected in the musculature and naturalistic poses seen in her sculpture, including the present work where the panther is stretching down from its high perch, carefully balanced, with its animated tail curling up.
