Lot Essay

Originally conceived as a fountain, the form for 'Over the Waves' was created in response to the popularity of garden sculpture in the 1920s. The composition was cast in three sizes: the 54-inch version was cast in an edition of eleven; the 48-inch version was cast in an unknown edition size; the 12-inch version was cast in an edition of six, of which the present work is number one. A 48-inch cast is in the collection of the Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa, Florida.
