This distinctive flat and finely curled carving is attributed to the Trough of Bowland in North Lancashire. A cupboard with similar carving and dated 1658 is illustrated in Victor Chinnery Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge 1979, page 486, fig 4.167. The fact that a tiny heart motif appears in the carving to each upper door and there are three initials with the date may indicate that this cupboard was given as a marriage gift.
