Ale and Hearty
These five Toby jugs were once part of the extensive collection of Ralph Wood type pottery assembled in the last century by Sir Harold Mackintosh Bt. Much of his collection was sold at Sotheby's London in 1967, however these examples were never offered.
Jugs of this type were once catalogued as 'Astbury Type', but are now known to date to later in the 18th century. Also known as 'Midshipmites' or 'Midshipmates' these are the very rarest and earliest forms of Toby; the family also includes Drummers and Tailors.
