Lot Essay

Wellington Arch, built 1825/27, was originally intended as an outer entrance to Buckingham Palace but in 1846 it became a pedestal for a huge statue of the Iron Duke. It was only when the arch was moved in 1883/85 that the statue was taken down and the current statue of the four-horse chariot replaced it in 1911/12.
