Lot Essay
Joseph Gott trained in London between 1798 and 1802 under John Flaxman, and from 1805 at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1822 he moved permanently to Rome. Gott made frequent visits to England to obtain commissions from both the aristocracy and the industrial magnates of the North and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1820 and 1848. He made many terracotta maquettes but finished works were always carved in marble.
