Lot Essay

A linen press with identical base, including old fashioned bracket feet of this type, is shown in a Gillows sketch of 1809 (Estimate Sketch Books folio no. 1863), while the upper section is a standard Gillows design of circa 1810-1815. The craftsman John Butler is not listed in Susan Stuart's monograph on the firm but her list is not comprehensive.
