Lot Essay

In 1962 an exhibition at London's Arthur Jeffress Gallery was devoted to paintings and drawings which John Piper had made on a recent visit to Rome. As well as works based upon the architecture of Rome itself, several views of the archaeological site at Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli (some closely related to the present work) featured in the collection.
