Lot Essay

Bertrand Russell's Wisdom of the West was published by Macdonald & Co/Rathbone Books in 1959. The well-illustrated volume contained full colour reproductions of 'Ten original compositions specially designed by John Piper', each one in some way relating to an epoch of Western history and thought. Piper is likely to have made the present work in 1956-7 in order to accompany paragraphs dealing with Ancient Greek philosophy. In the event an alternative work which Piper had designed to suit the theme was selected
