Lot Essay

These ewers are closely modelled on a pair dated 1815 in patinated and gilt bronze by Claude Galle, illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Próschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, vol.I, p.364, fig.5.12.6. Another very similar pair are illustrated in Les Bronzes du Mobilier National 1800-1870 (M-F. Dupuy Baylet, p.248, no.134). Other examples are in the Württembergisches Landesmuseum, Stuttgart and at the Palace of Pavlovsk near Leningrad.
