Twelve scenes or chapters from the fifty-four chapters of the famous eleventh-century tale are illustrated on this pair of screens. Six scenes are arranged on each screen, beginning with Chapter 1, "The Paulownia Court," at the upper right of the right screen, and ending with Chapter 43, "The Rose Plum," at the upper left of the left screen. The darker chapters, set in Uji, are not included here. Prominent at the bottom center of the right screen is Chapter 7, "An Autumn excursion," and at the bottom of the left screen is Chapter 24, "Butterflies."
