An inlaid mixed-metal lacquer box
Meiji period (late 19th century), metalwork signed Shorakusai Katsuhide and sealed Keiun
The rectangular box set on four short bracket feet fitted with two deep, rectangular drawers which slide from side to side, the cover decorated in soft metal with male and female pheasants worked in shibuichi, shakudo and gilt standing on a slightly mottled iron ground applied with scattered soft-metal plants and leaves, the upper half on a kinji ground, the sides of the box decorated in togidashi and gold hiramaki-e with water plants by a meandering stream set on a roiro ground lavishly sprinkled with gold, the interiors of the sliding boxes nashiji
