A lacquer writing box (suzuribako)
Edo period (18th century)
The box with overhanging lid decorated in varicolored gold and silver hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirikane, uchikomi and nashiji with cranes along the shoreline with rocks and hut, cranes flying above, the underside of the lid decorated with a landscape of a river valley with a waterfall and buildings, the moon inlaid in silver, all on a nashiji ground, the box tray fitted with a slate inkstone with fundame rim and a silver waterdropper (suiteki) in the form of a stylized cloud
