TWO LACQUER SNUFF BOTTLES
1800-1940
The first, Japanese, 1860-1940, is a mother-of-pearl-inlaid black lacquer bottle of high shouldered tapering rectangular form. The bottle is decorated on one side with a paradise fly catcher perched in the branches of a flowering tree. The reverse is decorated with two figures crossing a footbridge and a fisherman in a boat floating down river. The second, 1800-1900, is finely carved on both sides through the black layer to the cinnabar-red ground with the Eight Daoist Immortals above a petal-lappet band. The narrow sides are carved with peony emerging from rockwork.
