Lot Essay

This is an extremely rare Yangzhou multiple-overlay snuff bottle for its unusually small size and color combination. Another example with this color combination in the collection of Eric Young (Part III), decorated with a boy on a water buffalo, was sold at Sotheby's London, 24 April 1989, lot 249. A Yangzhou School bottle with cinnabar-red overlay on a coffee-tone ground, carved with scenes similar to those on present bottle, from the Kaynes-Klitz Collection, Part II, was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 30 October 1990, lot 13.
