TWO CARVED OVERLAY GLASS SNUFF BOTTLES
1820-1900
The first, probably Yangzhou School, 1820-1900, is a sky-blue glass bottle of flattened, rounded form carved through the pink overlay to form the long loop handles on the narrow sides and the oval foot rim. The second bottle, Yangzhou School, 1830-1890, is a five-color overlay white glass bottle carved through the green, lavender, yellow, tawny brown and pink overlays on one side with a vase containing a flower surrounded by fruit and a small bird, below a bat in flight and a bird carrying peony stem in its beak. An oval seal to the side reads jixiang ('auspicious'). The reverse is carved with a duck swimming in a lotus pond. The narrow sides are carved with mask and ring handles.

Lot Essay

The raised side panels on the first bottle may suggest it is a product of Yangzhou School, but the decoration is in a unique combination of colors and an atypical style.
