A MOTTLED GREEN AND PALE GREENISH-WHITE JADEITE RUYI SCEPTER
LATE QING DYNASTY
The ruyi head is carved in low relief with a gnarled Buddha's hand citron tree bearing five fruit growing from a pierced rock within a key-fret border repeated on the sides of the arched handle, which is carved on top with five bats (wufu) in flight amidst clouds. The tapered tip is pierced for a silk cord.

Bat is a pun for 'good fortune', and five bats, wufu, symbolize longevity, wealth, health, virtue and a peaceful death. The first character in finger citron (foshou) is a play on the words for 'good fortune' and 'riches', and the second character is a pun for 'longevity'; the fruit therefore conveys the auspicious wish of good fortune and riches combined.
