The painting shows a rarely depicted episode near the end of the Devi Mahatmya, in which the goddess appears in a beneficent form to preach to the assembled gods. The inscription on the verso explains that the gods' boundless praises of the Great Goddess who defeated the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha resound throughout all the worlds.
