The story of the Ramayana is well-known and beloved the world over, and in this painting the viewer is rewarded with portraits of the most pertinent characters: Laxmana, who holds the flywhisk above Rama's head, their brothers Bharata and Shatrugana holding his arrow quiver and shield, respectively, and the leaders of their allies standing before them, from right to left they are Hanuman, the monkey with the brown fur, Sugriva the monkey king in white, and Jambavan the boar king.
