ALVARES, Francisco (c.1465-1541). Historia de las cosas de Etiopia .. nuevamente traduzido de portugues en castellano por ... Thomas de Padilla. Antwerp: J. Steelsius, 1557. 8° (135 x 90mm). Woodcut device on title, woodcut initials. (A few small marginal repairs, one to title, without final blank.) Red morocco by Brugalla, 1945, gilt supralibros, gilt spine-lettering, turn-ins and edges. Provenance: purchased from Librería Babra, 1937.
THE RARE FIRST SPANISH EDITION. Father Alvarez, a Portuguese Franciscan missionary, was sent to Ethiopia by Manoel I of Portugal, acting as chaplain to the the ambassador, Duarte Galvao. He remained there for six years and travelled extensively. His history contains the first detailed description of Ethiopia to appear in a European language, originally published in Portuguese as Ho Preste Ioam das Indias (Lisbon, 1540). Only two copies recorded at auction in ABPC/AE online. Adams A-848; Brunet I, 205; Howgego A76; Salva II, 3266; Peeters-Fontainas 43; Palau I, 9249: 'apreciado libro'.
