THE RARE FIRST SPANISH EDITION. Father Alvarez, a Portuguese Franciscan missionary, was sent to Ethiopia by Manoel I of Portugal, acting as chaplain to the the ambassador, Duarte Galvao. He remained there for six years and travelled extensively. His history contains the first detailed description of Ethiopia to appear in a European language, originally published in Portuguese as Ho Preste Ioam das Indias (Lisbon, 1540).
