Ninth edition, with the first three books devoted to Boscán and the last to the more major poet, Garcilaso. Together the two friends were instrumental in introducing Italianate verse and mood into Spain. Their tercets, sonnets and 'octavas reales' were among the earliest in Spanish, and they exercised considerable influence on later writers such as Francisco de Figueroa. Boscán's widow, Ana Girón de Rebolledo, the figure to whom his most charming love poetry was addressed, collected their works for posthumous publication in Barcelona in 1543. The first edition was bibliographically significant in marking the transition from gothic to roman type in Spanish. But all 16th-century editions are rare, those published in Spain particularly so. The Peeters-Fontainas copies, sold in 1978, all had Antwerp imprints. To find the sale of a Spanish imprint through ABPC/AE, one has to go back to 1961 when a poor copy of the first edition sold for $336. Brunet I, 1123; Palau II, 33384.
