HUERTA, Jeronimo de Gomez de (c.1570-1643). Florando de Castilla lavro de cavalleros. Alcala de Henares: Juan Gracian, 1588. 8° (190x130mm). Engraved device on title. (First bifolium strengthened in the inner margin, some light and even browning, faint dampstain in the last gatherings, a few small marginal tears and losses.) 20th-century black leather, spine gilt in compartments centred with fleur-de-lis, the sides diapered in blind and each centred with a fleur-de-lis in gilt, the partial lozenges along the border centred with a gilt dot, the whole within a gilt double-rule border, leather doublures repeating this design, moiré-style endpapers, gilt edges (endpapers discoloured by the adhesive of the doublures). Provenance: cancelled inscription dated 1602 in the margin of the last leaf -- Roman Goycoerrotea (title stamp; bibliographical note on front endpaper) -- purchased from Antonio López, 1944.
FIRST EDITION of this 'ambitious' romance in which a knight descended from Hercules is stirred from luxury and languor by his illustrious forbear, and distinguishes himself with great deeds (OCSL). Huerta later produced the first translation of Pliny's natural history in Spanish, and was court physician to Philip IV. RARE. AE records only one copy selling at auction (in 1952). Palau VI, 116647.
